Try switching to 'Ubuntu (safe mode)' along the bottom of your screen after selecting your user account. This sounds like a problem with your X configuration. I'm going to try some older versions of Ubuntu for now, but it would be nice if the newest version could be used. Also In the log in screen, I can only shutdown Ubuntu through Fusion software, the Ubuntu shutdown option just doesn't work. You might try booting off an Ubuntu ISO and take a look at your disk. Sounds like a problem with GRUB, the VM's BIOS can't find anything to boot.
